Methow weekend

Last weekend was awesome! We had so much fun going to Methow Valley. Scott already posted his pics, but here's a few more from our weekend.

The drive to Methow can be brutal. It's about 4.5 hours away and with 2 toddlers, it can see like a lot longer. Leavenworth is a 10 minute detour about half way through and while we weren't really hungry for lunch yet because it was only 10 in the morning, we decided to stop anyway so we can stretch our legs and grab some coffee.

Bundled up just to get a pastry!

Nora's face here is so funny.

And now, Evie's turn.

Our little coffee break actually lasted almost 1.5 hours! We skiddaddled after we noticed the time and continued on. There was snow on the ground the entire drive, starting from Snoqualamie. It wasn't just a little dusting either - there was a good inch or two everywhere! It made for a really pretty drive. We made it all the way to Winthrop before we stopped for lunch. Sadly, most of the restaurants were closed so we ended up at a very mediocre "saloon" for fish and chips, burgers and pizza.

I ordered fish and chips thinking I could share with Nora but she wanted
nothing to do with it! I should've just ordered what I wanted instead.

From Winthrop, it's about another 15-20 minutes to Mazama, which is where our cabin was. We finally got situated and into the house probably around 3pm or so. While we waited for our buddles Vivienne and Winston to arrive, we played with the toys in the house:

Here's our cabin that we rented. Look at the snow! Nora was a little unsure what to think of it at first but she got the hang of it by the end of the weekend.

Snow picture of when we first got to the house.
The next day, our first order of business was to play in the snow! We all geared up for our snow day. With 2 kiddos, getting ready to just go out into the snow takes forever! We had even bought some new gear for Evie -The saleslady at REI had convinced us to get BOQ rain boots instead of actual snow boots because they were so much more versatile and i have to say, they kept her warmer than I expected! I didn't hear a peep from her once that she was cold. Good thing because we were out in the snow a lot!

Evie and Vivienne playing around in a big snow pile.

Evie's first time snowshoeing!

Girls trudging along.

We snowshoed to the Methow River,
which was right at the back of the property.

Great stopping points for the girls, even though it
was only about a 5 min walk from the house.

Exhausted Evie. Snowshoeing is a workout!
Later that day, Jeff stayed home with Winston while he napped and the rest of us grabbed our ski gear to do some cross country skiiing. This was what we came to Methow for! The valley is known for having the largest system of x-country ski trails - 120 miles in total. There are some trails that are free, but most are not.
We rented a few chariots to haul the kids around.

I got to haul around Nora. She did great for her first time in this!
She feel asleep half way.

Beautiful wintry tracks.

We saw very few other people out on the trais.
Back at the cabin, we settled in for the night. With so much space and 4 toddlers, there was never a quiet moment.
The loft upstairs had a couch of TV. This was a fun space for the kids to play.

Bath time!

It snowed another 8 inches or so that night. This was the scene
from the kitchen window the next morning.

On Saturday morning, we decided to split up. The boys took the babies out for a ski run while Stephanie and I took the older kids for another snowshoe trek. We did the same pretty little walk again down to the river but it was a lot harder today because of the new snow.

Evie took lots of breaks to eat the snow.

Methow River.

Evie literally threw herself into the snow multiple times because she was so tired.
You can see how much snow we got - parts of the trail were almost as tall as Evie!
After the girls were exhausted from our walk, Stephanie and I decided to do a ski run just on our own. Skiing with the chariot was so much easier! We did a loop from our cabin all the way to the Mazama Country Store. In total, it was about 4.4 miles and took us about 2 hours.

Stephanie and I before our run.

We passed over the Methow River many times.

Pretty barn on the trail.

Despite it being a Saturday, we passed only a
handful of people on the trails.

Back at the Cabin, the boys were playing with the kids and we came home to find this little fella welcoming us!

Snow man? girl? creature?

Swinging in the snow.

Hi little one!

Rock climbing up the poles.
Practicing chin ups?

The 4 munchkins, all in a row.
We had a wonderful time, as usual. We can't wait to go back again! Who wants to go with us next time?!

Japan trip

We got back from Japan about a week ago and we're still talking about what a great trip it was!  Japan has never been super high on my places to visit but for a lot of reasons (I've never been, it's clean, it's safe, it's different) we took the plunge and booked it as our summer vacation this year. It helped that our friends, the Wongs, went last year, raved about it and loved it so much they were going again and we were able to coordinate so that some of our trip overlapped with theirs. It helped even more that the yen is at a 10-year low (maybe all time low?) against the dollar, which, aside from airfare, made everything quite affordable.  Look how low the yen is! We lucked out that it kept falling after we booked our tix in Dec. Since this was our first big overseas trip since COVID and with kids (or, lets face it, SINCE kids), I dove into prepping for our trip - including trying to keep up my Duolingo streak of learning Japanese for at least a few minutes everyd

Family time

I had to do a quick trip to LA towards the end of July to say goodbye to my Uncle Pang, who passed away a few weeks earlier. I have fond memories of fun cousin time at his house in Palos Verdes and Uncle Pang taking us to the beach when we were younger. I remember how he delighted in making us kids squeal with laughter by pretending the car ride was a rolleroaster - we'd take sharp turns and all of us kids would slide to one side of his Volvo station wagon or he'd slow the car down to a roll and we'd all chant that we couldn't let the car stop and it would inch slowly forward at a stoplight.  Although it was a sad reason to get together, I think he would be happy to know that the weekend was also a wonderful get together with family. Because it was fairly last minute, none of the kids flew over which meant us "adult cousins" were able to have long talks and linger over food. Kin and Meredith were able to host a summertime bbq at their house and we had a nice t

Glasses

Nora got glasses! Now all of us in the family are four-eyes, haha. Her prescription is low but she was super excited about getting these. When she is older and hates glasses, I'll have to remind her how happy she was to get these!
