Happy Halloween!

We just got back from another epic weekend in San Francisco visiting Ian, Yee Yee and Uncle Kevin. The girls were SO excited about the visit and it did not disappoint!

Flying out to Oakland was pretty uneventful. Scott got upgraded to first class again so I enjoyed my time with the munchkins back in cattle class. This was the first time Nora got a seat all to herself without a car seat buckled in and she was a little squirmy but big sister Evie set a great example and she followed suit.

First order of business  when we landed was to get lunch! What better place than to go to In N Out?! The sun was shining so we had a nice lunch outside and us Seattle-lites loved sitting in that warm sunshine! As for the burgers, I was worried Evie and Nora wouldn't like all the stuff on their burgers so got them plain ones. Turns out, they liked mine better and Evie ended up gobbling the rest of my cheese burger-with-everything while I ate hers.

That evening, we crammed int the car and made our way to Tera Firma Farms, where they were having their annual Halloween pumpkins-on-pikes bash.

The next day, we headed into San Francisco to check out the Exploratorium. What a great museum! It's a  museum that's all about science so EVERY exhibit was somehow interactive and taught concepts about why the world works the way it does. The theory piece was lost of the kids, but all of us (adults too!) had a fun time playing around in the museum.

And then, finally, Halloween day arrived! When Nora woke up I told her "Today is Halloween!" and her face immediately lit up with a smile and she exclaimed "I get candy!". It was too cute! That girl has a serious sweet tooth. Anyway, we took the kids in the morning to a play gym to run off some energy, and then got to work on carving some pumpkins.

Guess which one was designed by a boy, and which one by a girl?
After pumpkin carving, we donned our costumes and headed over to Nana and Papa's house. Their neighborhood gets all tricked out for Halloween so it was a treat to be able to join them again to celebrate this year. Unfortunately, us Seattlelites must have brought the rain down south with us because the skies opened up and it poured down on us when we went out trick or treating! The kids didn't seem to enjoy trick or treating as much this year becuase of that, and after about an hour or so, we headed back to the house. An hour still meant PLENTY of candy though so no one was disappointed in the loot.

Her favorite part of the costume were these face stickers.
She got LOTS of compliments on them!

The next day, we sadly hugged Ian, Yee Yee and Uncle Kevin goodbye and headed to SFO but our adventure hadn't ended yet. Guess what we found in Nora's shoe when she took them off on the plane? A baby lizard!!! This must have been the little guy who was lurking in the garage the day before. It is both funny and gross to me that Nora didn't seem to even notice that this was in her shoe all day. We didn't hear her complain at all during the day! She didn't seem to realize when he fell out of her shoe either. Evie and I both shrieked though and made quite a commotion. YUCK! oh well, it was a memorable end to a very fun and memorable weekend!

  1. We had so much fun having you guys visit again for Halloween! I'm glad you all had fun despite the rain. The lizard story is going down into the history books...we'll be talking about that for years to come!

Family time

I had to do a quick trip to LA towards the end of July to say goodbye to my Uncle Pang, who passed away a few weeks earlier. I have fond memories of fun cousin time at his house in Palos Verdes and Uncle Pang taking us to the beach when we were younger. I remember how he delighted in making us kids squeal with laughter by pretending the car ride was a rolleroaster - we'd take sharp turns and all of us kids would slide to one side of his Volvo station wagon or he'd slow the car down to a roll and we'd all chant that we couldn't let the car stop and it would inch slowly forward at a stoplight.  Although it was a sad reason to get together, I think he would be happy to know that the weekend was also a wonderful get together with family. Because it was fairly last minute, none of the kids flew over which meant us "adult cousins" were able to have long talks and linger over food. Kin and Meredith were able to host a summertime bbq at their house and we had a nice t

Japan trip

We got back from Japan about a week ago and we're still talking about what a great trip it was!  Japan has never been super high on my places to visit but for a lot of reasons (I've never been, it's clean, it's safe, it's different) we took the plunge and booked it as our summer vacation this year. It helped that our friends, the Wongs, went last year, raved about it and loved it so much they were going again and we were able to coordinate so that some of our trip overlapped with theirs. It helped even more that the yen is at a 10-year low (maybe all time low?) against the dollar, which, aside from airfare, made everything quite affordable.  Look how low the yen is! We lucked out that it kept falling after we booked our tix in Dec. Since this was our first big overseas trip since COVID and with kids (or, lets face it, SINCE kids), I dove into prepping for our trip - including trying to keep up my Duolingo streak of learning Japanese for at least a few minutes everyd

Miss Evie becomes a teenager

EEEK! We officially have a teenager in our house!  I can't believe our little Evie is now 13 years old. I can still see her as a little girl saying "Swiper no swiping!"  For her birthday this year, she and a few of the neighborhood girls went to get their nails done at the salon nearby. She doesn't remember the last time she got her nails professionally done ( back in 2016! ) so she was pretty excited about it. She picked a very pretty teal color. Afterwards, the girls had some cake.  To celebrate her actual birthday, her ask was for tv time, shopping and sushi. So after a morning spent hanging out in from the tv, we headed to Bellevue Square mall where guess what? She got a phone! Technically, I got a new phone and handed down my old phone to her. We spent a good 3 hours doing all the transfers but she was very patient about it and grinning from ear to ear when we went to dinner that night.  At 13, Evie has become a very stereotypical teenage girl - she loves clothes
