Happy 6th Birthday, Eve-meister!

A birthday is an event in and of itself, but turning 6 for Evie was a doozy!

The day started off pretty good - she woke up super early at 6am to open her gifts and was happy as a clam before she went to school.

We got a call from school in the early afternoon that this little girl fell off a climbing rock and hurt her wrist pretty badly. A quick trip to the doctor and a pink splint later to keep her fractured wrist straight, here's our little munchkin:



She really wanted to do TGIF (Parent's Night Out) at school for her birthday, where the kids get to stay late and play while us parents get to have a date night. I think missing TGIF is what made her the saddest but we made do by ordering Chinese food ( we had to get her favorite Orange Chicken!) and rented Sing to have a movie night. We also bought a store-made Apple Pie at her request and while it made for a good picture, the pie itself wasn't so good. Oh well!

Evie - I hope you have a wonderful year and that all of your wishes come true! You are growing up to be such a sweet, silly, and smart girl. I wish everyone in the world had a kid like Evie!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EVIE! That's an awesome photo of Evie blowing out the candles -- she looks like she's trying SO HARD to make her wish come true! And hey, at least with the sprained wrist she'll always remember turning 6...

Family time

I had to do a quick trip to LA towards the end of July to say goodbye to my Uncle Pang, who passed away a few weeks earlier. I have fond memories of fun cousin time at his house in Palos Verdes and Uncle Pang taking us to the beach when we were younger. I remember how he delighted in making us kids squeal with laughter by pretending the car ride was a rolleroaster - we'd take sharp turns and all of us kids would slide to one side of his Volvo station wagon or he'd slow the car down to a roll and we'd all chant that we couldn't let the car stop and it would inch slowly forward at a stoplight.  Although it was a sad reason to get together, I think he would be happy to know that the weekend was also a wonderful get together with family. Japan trip

We got back from Japan about a week ago and we're still talking about what a great trip it was!  Japan has never been super high on my places to visit but for a lot of reasons (I've never been, it's clean, it's safe, it's different) we took the plunge and booked it as our summer vacation this year. It helped that our friends, the Wongs, went last year, raved about it and loved it so much they were going again and we were able to coordinate so that some of our trip overlapped with theirs. It helped even more that the yen is at a 10-year low (maybe all time low?) against the dollar, which, aside from airfare, made everything quite affordable.  Look how low the yen is! We lucked out that it kept falling after we booked our tix in Dec. Since this was our first big overseas trip since COVID and with kids (or, lets face it, SINCE kids), I dove into prepping for our trip - including trying to keep up my Duolingo streak of learning Japanese for at least a few minutes everyd...

Happy new year!!

Goodness, it's already 2025! It's been a really long time since we posted!  We had a very lazy new year. We flew back from LA on the evening of the 31st so spent the last remaining hours of 2024 cozying up on the couch and then fell asleep before it even hit midnight! On New Years day, we slept in, cleaned up the house and then did a quick hike the next day. All in all, a good start to the year! Nora's new blanket hoodie. Cold and muddy trails. We're not in LA anymore! We hiked the Primrose trail that follows Coal Creek.
