Bizarre Foods with Evie

When we were at the asian market the other day, we spied a can of "Silkworm pupa", which is supposedly a popular Korean street food. I'm all for sustainable eats so I thought, why not? Let's try it! Would you eat these? Here's what they look like: They are in a soy sauce brine Hoping that putting it on a plate make them look more appetizing We dared the kids to eat it. Evie and Kingston took us up on the challenge and we all gulped it down together.  The verdict?  It has a crunchy exterior and a mushy center that squirted out when you bit into it. Yes, I know, my first mistake was biting it at all but I wanted to taste the crunch! Scott said it reminded him of a chestnut because of the soft center and nutty flavor, and I think it's a pretty good description.  I read that some street vendors fry them and put chili on it, which would probably be much better than these canned ones. These weren't horrible but definitely not great either. My final take on these

Mt Baker

Mt Baker is a local mountain about 3 hours north of us, right near Bellingham and below the Canadian border. The mountain is supposedly a great place for skiing and snowboarding because it is super powdery (it set the world record for snowfall one year with 95 feet of snow!) and not too crowded. But, because it's far for a day trip, we haven't really explored it at all. Since we had the extra day for MLK weekend, we made a last minute decision to head up that way and finally check it out.  We had quite the adventurous day skiing! Since Nora is now skiing, I bought a ticket too and skied with her for a good chunk of the day. This was my first time on a lift and down a run since Evie was born 9 years ago! While I went with Nora, Scott took Evie on her first ever blue and black runs. GOOOOO Evie! The big excitement came though when I bowed out a bit early - my legs were tired and so I went to go hang out by the lodge while Nora joined Kathy and Kinsey for a few more runs. Nora had

Finally snowing!

We were thinking our chances of getting any snow at our house this season was ending but we got a nice snowstorm come through finally! It started after dark last night and was very light, and as of noon today we had about 9 inches and it's still coming down! We went out for a little cross country skiing in the neighborhood and some sledding outside and just got back in. YAY for snow!

Skate skiing

Scott has been very keen to try skate skiing and since he found some cheap used skis for the girls, we went off to test out their new equipment! Skate skiing is a bit different from cross country in that it uses uses shorter skis and, instead of staying in the tracks, you typically skate in the middle of the trail by pushing off your skis from side to side. You move much faster than cross country skiing but obviously not as fast as downhill skis or ice skating. The girls (especially Evie) had a good time trying out skate skiing and got the hang off it very quickly. Scott and I tried with our regular cross country skis and were mildly successful. It was still fun enough that we'd totally do it again. It also didn't hurt that there was lovely new snow while we were out and we were on a very flat wide trail that wasn't at all crowded. We'll be back! Evie's form, while Nora tried to stay in the tracks. We were out for about 3 hours and this was about the halfway point.

ski jumping

Scott took the girls night skiing last week on an early dismissal school day and they gained a lot of confidence on the slopes! It helped that it wasn't too crowded and there was light snow so it was nice and powdery on the slopes. They were confident enough that they are now trying to jump while they are skiing. Pretty funny because they look like cute little stuck rabbits.

Wonton master

We made some wonton dumplings yesterday and the girls helped me wrap them up. Can you tell which ones I folded and which ones the girls folded?
