Rainier visit 2021

Rainier was tiring, and the view was bad, so the only thing that made it worth it was the berries. -Evie

But Mom disagrees. I think Saturday had gorgeous views - we picked a new-to-us hike to kick start the weekend and tried out the Snow and Bench Lake trail. It was actually only about 2.5 miles roundtrip, so really not that far at all! And, since this trail was off of the main peak, our views were OF the Mt Tahoma, which was very beautiful! Take a look! Btw, all of these are untouched photos! #nofilter!

Bench lake with Rainier in the background. The water was soooo still.

Snow lake is a filled with glacial water

There's 2 campsites you can backpack in to, and this is where we stopped to have a picnic lunch.

Pretty, right?

The fall colors were just beginning to showl.

Quick stop at Reflection Lake

That evening, we did a night hike and I tried to take pictures as the sun began to set.

We spent the night at the Paradise Lodge, which is the historic inn at the top of Paradise and was built in 1917. We stayed in one of the recently remodeled annex rooms, which was basic and comfortable. The downside was that the main dining room was closed due to COVID so folks were doing picnic dinners or setting up camping stoves outside to cook dinner. We were prepared and brought 2 instant pots and made rice and beef stew!

The next day, we started off earlish (9am?) to do the same Skyline Trail hike, which is a pretty fun but challenging hike that takes you to a view point before veering up to basecamp for those who want to scale the peak. We've done it before with the kids so don't know why there was so much whining about it this time around but it certainly didn't help that it was gray and gloomy so no views to speak of. The saving grace were all the yummy wild blueberry and huckleberries that we found on the trail.

The weather cleared up a bit by the time we hit the peak and the kids moods brightened so the way down was super fast and easy. It was a fun weekend, one that we always look forward to. Next time though, I want to try other hikes around the park!

Getting ready to head out!

Foggy morning

yep, fog all morning long

We stopped for another picnic lunch

Only a little bit of snow this time around becuase we went so late in the season.

yay! Sun starting to peak out! We felt so close to the clouds!

The fog beginning to clear so that we can get a view of the trail we hiked up.

Trekking back down

Family time

I had to do a quick trip to LA towards the end of July to say goodbye to my Uncle Pang, who passed away a few weeks earlier. I have fond memories of fun cousin time at his house in Palos Verdes and Uncle Pang taking us to the beach when we were younger. I remember how he delighted in making us kids squeal with laughter by pretending the car ride was a rolleroaster - we'd take sharp turns and all of us kids would slide to one side of his Volvo station wagon or he'd slow the car down to a roll and we'd all chant that we couldn't let the car stop and it would inch slowly forward at a stoplight.  Although it was a sad reason to get together, I think he would be happy to know that the weekend was also a wonderful get together with family. Because it was fairly last minute, none of the kids flew over which meant us "adult cousins" were able to have long talks and linger over food. Kin and Meredith were able to host a summertime bbq at their house and we had a nice t...

Happy new year!!

Goodness, it's already 2025! It's been a really long time since we posted!  We had a very lazy new year. We flew back from LA on the evening of the 31st so spent the last remaining hours of 2024 cozying up on the couch and then fell asleep before it even hit midnight! On New Years day, we slept in, cleaned up the house and then did a quick hike the next day. All in all, a good start to the year! Nora's new blanket hoodie. Cold and muddy trails. We're not in LA anymore! We hiked the Primrose trail that follows Coal Creek.

Cousins trip: Banff!

Just 2 weeks ago I was in the beautiful town of Banff enjoying girl time with my cousins and taking in the picturesque landscape and now I'm holed up in front of my computer doing work. Oh how I wish I could go back! This was my second trip to Banff (first time was back in 2019 on a roadtrip with the family ) and I got to check out other parts of this beautiful National Park while laughing it up with these girls to celebrate Frances' big birthday..  We all met up at Calgary airport on Friday morning and after a quick lunch at Calan Noodles for hand-made beef noodle soup (yum!), we hopped in our rental car and drove the 90 minutes to Banff. I was surprised and impressed at how easy the drive was - even easier than driving to Whistler because of the wide and well maintained freeway.  That first afternoon in Banff we walked around town and did some shopping before making our way to Brazen, a bistro serving "Modern Canadian" fare. What's Modern Canadian you ask? We di...
