Our Evie pie is now a "rising" middle-schooler and officially 11 years old! She turned 11 almost a month ago, but it's taken me forever to post about it.

We celebrated in a variety of ways with a busy few weeks! It started afternoon tea with just us girls! It was super fun and something that I want to make a tradition. Then, she had her dance recital where she did a lovely lyrical jazz dance to "time-after-time" as part of the dance class she's been going to for the past 6 months or so. On the day of her actual birthday (June 9), it was pretty low key. Grammie and Grandpa were in town to help us celebrate, and that meant Evie got to have her absolutely favorite dessert : Grammie's apple pie! The day after that, we drove out to the Olympic Peninsula to soak in some hot springs (more in another post later). Then last week was all of the end-of-year and end-of-elementary school celebrations like her 5th grade "camp" day, a graduation party for the entire class, and then her "promotion" ceremony. Then the next Saturday, we finally got to celebrate with her friends by having them over for a dinner-and-board-games night. Let me tell you - that was a LOUD party. So much screaming over each other to be heard. It was really fun to see them all giggling and having fun though, and they didn't make a huge mess either.

At 11 years old, Evie is a total sweetheart and you wouldn't be able to tell that she's on the cusp of becoming a (gulp!) teenager. She's still pretty rational and calm most of the time and hasn't had too many moody teen outbursts. She does, however, take for-e-ver getting ready in the morning - she loves her long showers and is a dawdler! Her favorite food is now salmon sushi, but she still has a soft spot for TJ's orange chicken. She also loves ginger ale now, but still doesn't like math much. She's gotten pretty good at flute and practices regularly even without us reminding her. 

The words I would use to describe Evie are: Voracious reader, deep thinker, avid researcher, rule-follower, creative thinker, doodler, cat-loving, big-eyed love bug. 

Nora describes Evie as kind, loving, spirited. (Isn't that sweet?)

Happy new year!!

Goodness, it's already 2025! It's been a really long time since we posted!  We had a very lazy new year. We flew back from LA on the evening of the 31st so spent the last remaining hours of 2024 cozying up on the couch and then fell asleep before it even hit midnight! On New Years day, we slept in, cleaned up the house and then did a quick hike the next day. All in all, a good start to the year! Nora's new blanket hoodie. Cold and muddy trails. We're not in LA anymore! We hiked the Primrose trail that follows Coal Creek.

1 week checkup

We took Nora to her one week check up today and guess what? We have a porker on our hands! She weighed in at a whopping 6 lbs. 5.5 oz. That's 2.5 oz more than her birth weight! They want the baby to be back at birth weight within 2 weeks so she beat that milestone pretty handily. Hooray! So far, she's been better than Evie at eating (she doesn't take nearly as long, although she falls asleep VERY often) but she's not as good as Evie at pooping. Poor thing always seems to have tummy issues - she's very squirmy and fussy when she doesn't burp or poop. The doc doesn't think it's a big problem though since she still has lots of wet diapers, but we'll have to keep a better eye on it now. We'll have another doctor check up (with shots!) next week.

Getting to Sunrise after sunrise

 It wouldn’t be a Seattle summer if we didn’t make the trek out to lovely Mt Rainier! We left pretty early and drove 2 hours to check out the north side of the volcano, Sunrise visitors center. Armed with plenty of candy, treats and PBJ, we took the trail up to Mt Fremont peak where you can check out an old fire lookout shelter perched on top. I can only imagine how intense that place would have been in a summer storm. We were equally concerned about not seeing a restroom for the caretaker either! I forgot to mention, on our hike up to the peak we noticed a big black bear scampering by a couple hundred yards above us towards the top of the mountain ridge. Pretty exciting! As you can imagine Nora had lots of questions about black bears and wanted to triple check that they aren’t as aggressive as grizzly bears.
