Thanksgiving in Whistler

I can't believe it's already December! We've been rocking around our Christmas tree for almost a month already but before we get to Christmas, first, we have to celebrate Thanksgiving.

For Thanksgiving this year, we decided to go to Whistler. It's been a while since we've been - the last time we were there was back in 2018 when we went with the Mackies, and last time we went for Thanksgiving was back in 2008, before any kids were born. It's not a holiday in Canada so Thanksgiving weekend isn't usually crowded, but it is opening weekend and hit-or-miss with snow. Our ski pass this year gave us opening weekend as a free weekend that didn't count against our pass days so we couldn't pass the opportunity!

We booked a condo with our friends, the Wongs, that had a fantastic location - it was only a few feet from the Whistler lift. The downside is that it was a bit noisy but the space was just big enough for us to have Thanksgiving dinner. Our friends, Emily and Mike, also were in Whistler so it was a big party with 10 of us that night!

Sadly, skiing was only so-so. It was beautiful bluebird days but there was very little snow - in fact, the Village was bare so you couldn't even ski all the way down. There was snow at the top, plus some man-made snow, and so in all there was probably a dozen blue and green runs open. Because of that, I felt like it was pretty crowded with lots of snowboarders zipping past me, and some areas that were super icy and other areas that were bumpy because the terrain hadn't yet been filled in with snow. In fact, after lunch at the lodge, Scott went down a path where he hit some rocks and messed up his calf. He was down and out after that and couldn't ski the rest of the trip. I went back up with the kids the next day but only stayed at the lodge, while Kathy and Edmond took the kids down the slopes.

On one of the days, we explored the town of Pemberton and did a little (icy) hike to a waterfall and tried out a brewery. Plus, we enjoyed the hot tub and pool at the Hilton next door (one of the perks of our condo!), walked around the shops in the Village and had fun crafting at the Makers Holiday Market.

Since we have a pass this year, we'll be back in a few weeks and hopefully the snow will be much better next time!

Snoozing on our drive up. We left around 8:30am.

We could see the lift line from our condo window.

Whistler was the site of the 2010 Olympics.

The only photo of the 4 of us from the weekend.

On Day 2, I stayed at the lodge. Kingston joined me in the afternoon...

While Kathy took Nora skiing....

She's a great skier now!

And Edmond took Evie and Kinsey skiing.

Sweetie pie skiers.

Turkey turned out great!

Thanksgiving dinner is served!

Fancy cocktails!

Best part of Turkey is the jook the next day!

It was chilly out - frozen river in the Village.

Hike to Nairn Falls.

Hard to see the falls

Falls made a cut into the rocks.

Afterwards, we stopped by Farmers Brewing in Pemberton

We took the kids while Edmond and Kathy skied.

Village lit up at night is really pretty.

We booked a Tatami Room for dinner one night.

It was nice to have our own room.

The other side of the room.

The next morning, we did crafts at the Makers Market.

We made cute hats!

Japan trip

We got back from Japan about a week ago and we're still talking about what a great trip it was!  Japan has never been super high on my places to visit but for a lot of reasons (I've never been, it's clean, it's safe, it's different) we took the plunge and booked it as our summer vacation this year. It helped that our friends, the Wongs, went last year, raved about it and loved it so much they were going again and we were able to coordinate so that some of our trip overlapped with theirs. It helped even more that the yen is at a 10-year low (maybe all time low?) against the dollar, which, aside from airfare, made everything quite affordable.  Look how low the yen is! We lucked out that it kept falling after we booked our tix in Dec. Since this was our first big overseas trip since COVID and with kids (or, lets face it, SINCE kids), I dove into prepping for our trip - including trying to keep up my Duolingo streak of learning Japanese for at least a few minutes everyd

Family time

I had to do a quick trip to LA towards the end of July to say goodbye to my Uncle Pang, who passed away a few weeks earlier. I have fond memories of fun cousin time at his house in Palos Verdes and Uncle Pang taking us to the beach when we were younger. I remember how he delighted in making us kids squeal with laughter by pretending the car ride was a rolleroaster - we'd take sharp turns and all of us kids would slide to one side of his Volvo station wagon or he'd slow the car down to a roll and we'd all chant that we couldn't let the car stop and it would inch slowly forward at a stoplight.  Although it was a sad reason to get together, I think he would be happy to know that the weekend was also a wonderful get together with family. Because it was fairly last minute, none of the kids flew over which meant us "adult cousins" were able to have long talks and linger over food. Kin and Meredith were able to host a summertime bbq at their house and we had a nice t

Glasses

Nora got glasses! Now all of us in the family are four-eyes, haha. Her prescription is low but she was super excited about getting these. When she is older and hates glasses, I'll have to remind her how happy she was to get these!
